Fed Zeppelins: Grand Dukes Restaurant & Deli brings Lithuania to Chicago

The Lithuanian priests had finished their meal of wild boar and zeppelins, and were putting on their coats when one said to Andrius Bucas, "I feel when I open this door I will be stepping out into the streets of Vilnius."

Čikagoje jau pilstomas lietuviškas alus – „Švyturį“ galima bus užsisakyti net ir metrais

Nuo šiol pilstomu lietuvišku alumi karštą vasaros dieną gali mėgautis ne tik Lietuvos gyventojai. Netoli Čikagos esančiame restorane „Kunigaikščių užeiga“ pirmą kartą istorijoje pradėta prekiauti net kelių rūšių „Švyturio“ alumi iš statinių. Nors alkoholiniai gėrimai ir maisto produktai iš tėvynės JAV lietuviams nėra jokia naujiena, galimybė restorane užsisakyti pilstomo lietuviško alaus atsirado tik šiemet.

Chicago Tribune reviews Grand Dukes Restaurant:

"This Lithuanian restaurant evokes a Medieval aura, with dark wood furniture and appointments, large paintings of royalty (all of it brought from Lithuania) and subdued lighting to summon a castlelike effect."

"The enormous, bilingual menu (with photos, no less) boasts "authentic Lithuanian and Eastern European Cuisine." Along with items such as zeppelins (football-shaped, meat-filled potato dumplings), lots of beets, herring, mushrooms and cabbage, you'll also find a broader selection of pork, beef, chicken and seafood dishes. It's all made here, even dessert. In what must be in keeping with the East European dining ethic, giant portions are meant to sustain you through a harsh winter."

Review from TimeOutChicago.com:

"You'll discover what seems to be the wild fantasy of some hunting enthusiast/interior designer—as well as Chicagoland's “fanciest” Lithuanian dining. In a room of dark wood, sturdy beams, heraldry and portraits of medieval nobility, diners enjoy hearty sausages, sauces and pickles favored in Baltic states. The “fried bread hill” is a perfect drinking buddy: a bready Lincoln Log–like construction coated with garlicky cheese. For an entrée, the ground boar wrapped in bacon is a flavorful blend of both wild and domestic porkers. Visit the well-stocked deli for cheeses, meats and housemade salads to take a piece of Lithuania home with you."
